RIP Blog!

I resisted the Facebook temptation for a long time because it seemed to overlap the purpose of this blog so much. Then one day I gave into Facebook and a few months later I find myself wondering what this blog is for?

I don't have an answer so I guess this is the end of the road baby...=-(

Peanut Factoid

Peanuts and antioxidants

"Recent research on peanuts and nuts in general has found antioxidants and other chemicals that may provide health benefits.[11] New research shows peanuts rival the antioxidant content of many fruits. Roasted peanuts rival the antioxidant content of blackberries and strawberries, and are far richer in antioxidants than apples, carrots or beets. Research conducted by a team of University of Florida scientists, published in the journal Food Chemistry, shows that peanuts contain high concentrations of antioxidant polyphenols, primarily a compound called p-coumaric acid, and that roasting can increase peanuts' p-coumaric acid levels, boosting their overall antioxidant content by as much as 22%.[12]"

I got this SPAM email today. Normally I'd just delete and move on, but I have to ask.....do they really make gel caps with little time release red hearts? That's so cool. I'd have to bug my doctor for a prescription for them...=-)

I'm at the top!...

I was trying to figure out why this image from my Flickr Photostream has been receiving so many hits compared to any of my other photos. It's not the best photo and it's buried deep in a folder of miscellaneous images.

Kurt suggested we do a Google search on "OM tattoo" and see what the results were....

Surprisingly my photo is at the top of the search results page which explains all the hits!

Apartment Recycling

Over the last year I've had a few items that I wanted to get rid of, but that were in good shape and could be used by someone else. These items didn't fit into any existing recycling or reuse program I was aware of so I had no obvious way to find a new home for them. There are some online options for connecting people with items that need a new owner, but I don't think its worth my while to post an entry and then communicate and meet up with a stranger for something small like a DVD. Not wanting t0 throw these items in the landfill I just left them sitting in a corner.

Then one day I had an inspiration - I live in a 60 unit apartment building so maybe someone else could use these items? Hmmm....how to communicate that they need a new home and get the item to the new owner without expending a lot of energy? Eureka! I had an idea....

My first test was a DVD movie I didn't want any longer. I put it in the corner of the elevator and pressed a random floor. The doors shut and the DVD was on its way. I used the same elevator an hour later and the DVD was gone. Sweet!

I have since used this new recycling program several times with success - from my perspective. It's an easy way to get things out the door that don't have enough value to spend too much energy finding them a new home.

I have considered that people may just throw the items out, but I think they wouldn't pick up the item if they had absolutely no interest in it. As well I don't put junk out using this system. I only put out items that are in good shape, that have an obvious use and that are complete with all parts needed for use... Even if only 50% of the items going into the elevator recycling program get used again that's still a reasonable outcome in my books.

RIP Steve

I voted Liberal this last election. Living in downtown Calgary many would have called that a wasted ballot, but I knew that Dion simply needed a push to get his Chretien on and crush the Conservatives with a surprise coalition sucker punch.

I'm not convinced the Liberal/NDP gang will be any better, but some how they're just a lot more likeable...=-)

Normally I'd be down on any Paris Hilton content, but this video response to John McCain's slam of celebrity political candidates is funny and her platform actually sounds better than McCain's - no wonder he lost.

I love the internet!

So I had a severely plugged toilet on my hands this morning. I've unplugged many a toilet and even own a superior plunger [I appreciate a quality tool], but this bad boy resisted all my efforts. It's Sunday so I didn't want to bug the building manager as it wasn't life or death - plus it was my fault even though I don't recall flushing anything unusual.

So I did the smart thing! I googled how to unplug a toilet and found a video with some advanced plunger techniques [who knew?] and a website with a great suggestion to fill the bowl to the brim for added water pressure on the clog.

Two attempts at advanced plunging and 60 mins of letting water pressure do it's thing and I was able to turn a shit-tastrophy into a triumph.

Sweet!...=-)

Let's stop playing the birthday game...

You know the "game" where you try and remember your friend's birthdays and make sure to send them an email or call them or drop in for a visit. I used to have a list with everyone's birthdays listed and I checked it regularly. I also tried using the automated e-cards programs so I could sit down and send a year's worth of b-day greetings in a single evening. Both systems work, but frankly they are a PITA.

So in the spirit of constructive criticism I'm going to suggest a new idea. How about everyone announce their birthday with at least a weeks notice? Send out an email, plan a party, blog, facebook - whatever floats your boat. Keep in mind not all of us use facebook so have at least two different channels for getting the info out there.

Why is this such a cunning idea? Well who is going to remember your birthday better than you? Plus there is the obvious pay back that if you let people know more of them will take the time to acknowledge your rapid aging!

I hate the iPhone!

Okay perhaps that's overstating things. The iPhone looks cool, but so many of the blogs and forums I read are being overrun with crappy iPhone photos that it makes me sad...=-( Folks I know you love your iPhones, but they don't take good pictures. In an emergency shoot away, but please carry and use a decent point 'n shoot camera if you are a blogger or plan to share you photos with people online.

Try taking a few photos with your iPhone and a decent point 'n shoot camera - compare them and see what you are missing out on.
